New Crop of #Immigrants in #Parliament Is Seen as Reflection of #Canada

www.DiasporaEngager.com/extPage/CanadianDiasporaPlatform #OTTAWA — He was a teenage refugee, fleeing civil war in Somalia, when he came to Canada 22 years ago. Now, after completing high school and earning degrees in history and law, Ahmed Hussen is about to be sworn in as a member of Parliament — one of 46 nonwhite candidates elected to the House of Commons on Oct. 19, most of them immigrants. FROM OUR ADVERTISERS “Even as recently as two years ago, if you asked, ‘Would you ever become an M.P. in Canada?’ I would say, ‘Impossible,’ ” said Mr. Hussen, 39, a Liberal who will represent a Toronto constituency. “It speaks well of Canadians that they’re willing to vote for a person based on his views and his platform, not where they come from.”

https://www.diasporaengager.com/extPage/ImmigrantDiasporaMembers #Multiculturalism, meet ISIS. In the latest issue of New York magazine, in an article titled “#ISIS at the Gyro King,” Mark Jacobson tracks the rise of the Uzbek community in the city and the motivation of the three men arrested for attempting to collaborate with America’s enemies. A lot of conclusions reached by Jacobson focus on the difficulty of the immigrant experience. “Many of these recent immigrants had practiced law and medicine in Uzbekistan,” he writes. “But here, with the language barrier, they work long shifts as home health aides and drive taxis, crowding as many as ten in a cramped apartment.” Nothing new here. My father was a doctor in the Soviet Union when he left in 1976; my mother, a teacher. In their first years in Brooklyn, living across the street from where the Gyro King now stands, he was a cab driver and she knitted yarmulkes for a Judaica store.

The 10 Most #Corrupt Countries in the #World - #Corruption #Perceptions Index

https://diasporaengager.com/extPage/GovernmentalAgency Corruption and economic turmoil often go hand-in-hand. In western nations like the United States and many European countries, we often see corruption come to light as the result of whistleblowers or journalistic efforts. But in many other areas of the world, however, corruption plays a major role in fostering staggering poverty and broken economic systems in a much more blatant way. Oftentimes, specific power structures and government architectures provide an easier means for corrupt politicians, businessmen, or military officials to exploit the system. Many governments have their roots in constitutions from generations ago, and have outgrown their current systems. Many other countries are ruled by a variety of independent tribal leaders and often lack a centralized power structure with any meaningful sway. #Transparency #International developed a comprehensive list of the world’s most corrupt nations last year, and ...

#South #Africa to Encourage #Student #Immigration

https://www.diasporaengager.com/extPage/Student Like other countries around the world, South Africa has acknowledged the value and importance of international students to its university system and growing economy. And the nation, which boasts the second largest #economy in #Africa, wants those international students to stay in South Africa once they finish their studies. Last month, South Africa's minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, announced that the country will be developing initiatives to encourage international students to remain after graduation. Let's take a closer look at the plans. Gigaba revealed the plans in October during a speech at an International Student Dialogue on International Migration. The Minister explained that South Africa hopes that “skilled immigrants” will help grow the country's economy, and that the forthcoming plans would “make it easy and straightforward for ...

#Diaspora digested: What the #Irish abroad crave from home - #irishtimes

It’s the guilty pleasures - not the Irish mammy’s dinners - that make the tummies rumble . We moved across the Irish Sea to join the Irish in London brigade three years ago, and food from home, when we can get our hands on it, often rekindles old memories and transports us back to Ireland, if only just for a few mouthfuls. We’ve developed a number of trad-with-a-twist recipes stemming from our own longing for the familiar, which are published on our blog, gastrogays.com. One example is a combination of two iconic Irish tastes - Tayto and a chicken fillet roll - resulting in a Tayto Fillet Roll featuring chicken breast crumbed in a smashed pack’s worth of cheese ‘n’ onion.
