African nations set to abandon intl court

Established in 2002, the international court aims at addressing impunity of the highest level. This is done through prosecuting the gravest of crimes, which are crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes and the crime of aggression. African states form the single largest block since 34 of the 122 members of the ICC are from the African continent. Countries that have already withdrawn from the ICC are South Africa, Burundi and Gambia. South Africa is a founding member of the court and its departure is expected to catalyze the exit of other African countries such as Kenya, which has long expressed a desire to withdraw from the ICC.
