Institute of the Black World » Our Work in the Age of Trump

The first step toward recovery is acknowledging you have a problem. So, in the aftermath of the presidential election can we admit that the same America that existed on Election Day, existed two decades ago, and exists today? To act like a different America emerged on November 9 is to simply be in denial. This is the America that always was, and for the foreseeable future will be. So, the “day after” was finally here. It seemed like it would never arrive after months of a cancerous presidential campaign that redefined how low we can go as a nation. We actually discovered a sub-basement in our house where the worse of our human tendencies troll. If we had another month, we would have likely taken another step down into the abyss. It’s been that miserable of an election and now we have to somehow pick up the shards of our broken nation and put it back together. It won’t be easy and it won’t happen in the span of the next presidential administration, but it’s work that must be done bec

As Obama departs, we owe him our thanks

Unemployment under 5 percent. Eighty-one months of jobs growth and counting. Average wages rising at 2.4 percent over the last year. Growth at 3.5 percent over the last full quarter. Inflation at 2 percent. 20 million more Americans with health insurance. America one of the global leaders in the green industrial revolution. A president respected at home and abroad, known for his thoughtfulness and his great eloquence. Let us hope that Trump can build on that legacy, and not lead us into a far deeper hole.

Obama\'s exit memo to America

Businesses that were bleeding jobs unleashed the longest streak of job creation on record. The auto industry has roared its way back, saving one million jobs across the country and fueling a manufacturing sector that, after a decade of decline, has added new jobs for the first time since the 1990s. And wages have grown faster over the past few years than at any time in the past forty.

Rainbow PUSH Coalition

The Rainbow PUSH Coalition (RPC) is a multi-racial, multi-issue, progressive, international membership organization fighting for social change. RPC was formed in December 1996 by Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. through the merging of two organizations he founded earlier, People United to Serve Humanity (PUSH, 1971) and the Rainbow Coalition (1984). With headquarters in Chicago and offices in Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and Oakland, we work to make the American Dream a reality for all our citizens and advocate for peace and justice around the world. We are dedicated to improving the lives of all people by serving as a voice for the voiceless. Our mission is to protect, defend, and gain civil rights by leveling the economic and educational playing fields, and to promote peace and justice around the world.

Empowering Africa’s Youth

When President Obama addressed the African Union in Ethiopia last year, he said, “The most urgent task facing Africa today and for decades ahead is to create opportunity for the next generation.” Seventy percent of Africans are under the age of 25 and Africa’s population is projected to double to two billion people by 2050. These demographic realities are part of the reason we must ensure that Africa’s youth are engaged in their communities and are vested in the future of their countries -- this is a central goal of YALI.

Black Immigrants Brace for Dual Hardships Under Trump

Two days before the presidential election, Donald Trump traveled to the deeply segregated city of Minneapolis to make a final pitch to voters. He didn't spend any time discussing Minnesota's racial wealth gap—according to one study, the state's financial disparity between races is the highest in the country—or the fatal police shooting of Philando Castile during a traffic stop in the state four months earlier. Instead, he talked about Minnesota's Somali population, larger than in any other state. "Here in Minnesota, you've seen first-hand the problems caused with faulty refugee vetting, with very large numbers of Somali refugees coming into your state without your knowledge, without your support or approval," Trump said in the November 6 speech. "Some of them [are] joining ISIS and spreading their extremist views all over our country and all over the world," he added.

African-Americans Didn't Do Well Under President Obama

What happened during the Obama years is not a change I can believe in, it was just more of the same. It is indisputable Barack Obama was the first non-white man to become President of the United States of America. But the question that still lingers for myself and many others, is whether we should be classifying him as the first African-American president? https://www.diasporaengager.com/Africa From its inception, the term African-American was created as a cultural safe haven for the progeny of American slaves. The classification is the marker of a connection that black Americans lost with Africa when their forefathers were brought to America in chains. It is my belief that when Jesse Jackson coined the term “African-American” in 1988, it was specifically tied to the multi-generational cultural cost of American chattel slavery.

Can Trump Save Africa and the African Diaspora After the Mixed Legacy of Obama?

Despite the controversial realities, there is hope for Africa and the African Diaspora if they can understand that their “salvation” will not come from any government in the East or West, but from themselves with the help of God Almighty, who did not predestinate Africa to be the headquarter of poverty despite its rich lands and smart intellectuals. AGOA 2015: Moving to Sustainable U.S.-Africa Trade and Investment Partnership

The American consumer has long been accustomed to reading labels marked “Made in China.” However, across the United States, more shoppers are seeing “Made in Ghana,” “Made in Tanzania,” and other labels. African products ranging from luxury bags to specialty hot sauces are reaching largely American audiences thanks to the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). Created in 2000, AGOA permits duty-free entry for nearly 98 percent of all imports from eligible African countries and has become the cornerstone of U.S. trade relations with the region.

LA Legal Defense Fund Created To Aid Immigrants Facing Deportation : The Two-Way : NPR

https://DiasporaEngager.com/extPage/ImmigrantIntegration Officials in Los Angeles on Monday unveiled a $10 million fund to provide legal services. They say they want the fund set up before Donald Trump becomes president. https://DiasporaEngager.com/extPage/ImmigrantIntegration Los Angeles and other cities are bracing for a crackdown on illegal immigration once Trump takes office next month. Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer told the Los Angeles Times: "The fund will ensure that there is 'more fairness and more effectiveness in the immigration system.' He cited statistics showing that immigrants who have representation have a better chance at succeeding in court." The plan calls for half the money to come from public funds and about half from private foundations. Details weren't released on how the funds would be allocated.
